Monday evening
Sunday evening

Preparation

Opening response

Favor us, Lord, and deliver us.

Lord, come quickly and help us.

Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Lord God, creator of day and night:

to you be praise and glory forever.

As darkness falls you renew your promise

to reveal among us the light of your presence.

By the light of Christ, your living Word,

dispel the darkness of our hearts

that we may walk as children of light

and sing your praise throughout the world.

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God forever.

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful,

let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God,

so may your mercy come down upon us

to cleanse our hearts

and set us free to sing your praise

now and forever.

Amen.

Hymn

Jesus, My Lord, Mighty to Save

Charles Wesley

Jesus, my Lord, mighty to save,

What can my hopes withstand,

While thee, my advocate, I have

Enthroned at God’s right hand?

Nature is subject to thy word,

All power to thee is given,

The uncontrolled, almighty Lord

Of hell, and earth, and heaven.

And shall my sins thy will oppose?

Master, thy right maintain;

Oh, let not thy usurping foes,

In me, thy servant, reign.

Come, then and claim me for thine own,

Savior thy right assert,

Come gracious Lord, set up thy throne,

And reign within my heart.

So shall I bless thy pleasing sway,

And, sitting at thy feet,

Thy laws with all my heart obey,

With all my soul submit.

So shall I do thy will below,

As angels do above,

The virtue of thy passion show,

The triumphs of thy love.

Thy love, the conquest more than gains,

To all I shall proclaim,

“Jesus, the King, the Conqueror reigns,

Bow down to Jesus’ name.”

To thee shall earth and hell submit,

And every foe shall fall,

Till death expires beneath thy feet,

And God is all in all.

Confession of sin

When we cry out to the Lord in our distress,

he will save us from our desperate circumstances.

God will bring us out of darkness

and out of the shadow of death.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

A time of silence and self-examination may be kept.

May the Father forgive us

by the death of his Son

and strengthen us

to live in the power of the Spirit

all our days.

Amen.

Let us thank the Lord for his faithful love,

and his wondrous works for all people.

Let us offer thanksgiving sacrifices

and declare what God has done in songs of joy.

cf Psalm 107

The Word of God

Psalm 127

Refrain:

The Lord will protect you on your journeys — whether going or coming — from now until forever
from now.

Unless it is the Lord who builds the house,

the builders’ work is pointless.

Unless it is the Lord who protects the city,

the guard on duty is pointless.

It is pointless that you get up early and stay up late,

eating the bread of hard labor

because God gives sleep to those he loves.

No doubt about it: children are a gift from the Lord;

the fruit of the womb is a divine reward.

The children born when one is young

are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.

The person who fills a quiver full with them is truly happy!

They won’t be ashamed when arguing with their enemies in the gate.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

The Lord will protect you on your journeys — whether going or coming — from now until forever
from now.

Psalm prayer

Lord, you are ever watchful

and bless us with your gifts;

as you provide for all our needs,

so help us to build only what pleases you;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 128

Everyone who honors the Lord,

who walks in God’s ways, is truly happy!

You will definitely enjoy what you’ve worked hard for—

you’ll be happy; and things will go well for you.

In your house, your wife will be like a vine full of fruit.

All around your table, your children will be like olive trees, freshly planted.

That’s how it goes for anyone who honors the Lord:

they will be blessed!

May the Lord bless you from Zion.

May you experience Jerusalem’s goodness your whole life long.

And may you see your grandchildren.

Peace be on Israel!

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm prayer

O Christ, our true vine,

may we your branches

be ever fruitful in your service

and share your love and peace with all your children,

in the power of the Spirit and to the glory of the Father.

Old Testament reading
Joshua 5:13-6:20

When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up. He caught sight of a man standing in front of him with his sword drawn. Joshua went up and said to him, “Are you on our side or that of our enemies?”

He said, “Neither! I’m the commander of the Lord’s heavenly force. Now I have arrived!”

Then Joshua fell flat on his face and worshipped. Joshua said to him, “What is my master saying to his servant?”

The commander of the Lord’s heavenly force said to Joshua, “Take your sandals off your feet because the place where you are standing is holy.” So Joshua did this.

Now Jericho was closed up tightly because of the Israelites. No one went out or came in. The Lord said to Joshua, “Look. I have given Jericho and its king into your power, along with its mighty warriors. Circle the city with all the soldiers, going around the city one time. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry seven trumpets made from rams’ horns in front of the chest. On the seventh day, circle the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

“Have them blow a long blast on the ram’s horn. As soon as you hear that trumpet blast, have all the people shout out a loud war cry. Then the city wall will collapse, and the people will rise up, attacking straight ahead.”

So Joshua, Nun’s son, called the priests. He said to them, “Lift up the covenant chest. Let seven priests carry seven trumpets made from rams’ horns in front of the Lord’s chest.” He said to the people, “Go forward. Circle the city. Let the armed soldiers go in front of the Lord’s chest.” As soon as Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying seven ram’s horn trumpets moved forward in front of the Lord. They blew the trumpets. The Lord’s covenant chest followed. The initial group of soldiers was going in front of the priests who were blowing the trumpets. The rear guard was coming behind the chest, with trumpets blowing continuously. Joshua ordered the people, “Don’t shout. Don’t let your voice be heard. Don’t let a word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you, ‘Shout!’ Then shout!”

He made the Lord’s chest circle the city, going around one time. They went back to the camp and stayed there overnight. Joshua got up early in the morning. The priests lifted up the Lord’s chest. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets made from rams’ horns were going in front of the Lord’s chest, blowing trumpets continuously. The armed soldiers were going in front of them. The rear guard was coming after the Lord’s chest, blowing trumpets continuously. They circled the city one time on the second day. Then they went back to the camp. They did this for six days.

On the seventh day, they got up at dawn. They circled the city in this way seven times. It was only on that day that they circled the city seven times. The seventh time, the priests blew the trumpets. Then Joshua said to the people, “Shout, because the Lord has given you the city! The city and everything in it is to be utterly wiped out as something reserved for the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute is to stay alive, along with everyone with her in her house. This is because she hid the messengers we sent. But you, keep away from the things set aside for God so that you don’t desire and take some of the things reserved. That would turn the camp of Israel into a thing doomed to be utterly wiped out and bring calamity on it. All silver and gold, along with bronze and iron equipment, are holy to the Lord. They must go into the Lord’s treasury.” Then the people shouted. They blew the trumpets. As soon as the people heard the trumpet blast, they shouted a loud war cry. Then the wall collapsed. The people went up against the city, attacking straight ahead. They captured the city.

New Testament reading
Matthew 11:20-30

Then he began to scold the cities where he had done his greatest miracles because they didn’t change their hearts and lives. “How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done among you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have changed their hearts and lives and put on funeral clothes and ashes a long time ago. But I say to you that Tyre and Sidon will be better off on Judgment Day than you. And you, Capernaum, will you be honored by being raised up to heaven? No, you will be thrown down to the place of the dead. After all, if the miracles that were done among you had been done in Sodom, it would still be here today. But I say to you that it will be better for the land of Sodom on the Judgment Day than it will be for you.”

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you’ve hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have shown them to babies. Indeed, Father, this brings you happiness.

“My Father has handed all things over to me. No one knows the Son except the Father. And nobody knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wants to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves. My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.”

Silence may be kept.

Gospel canticle
The Magnificat (The Song of Mary)

Refrain:

You show mercy to everyone, from one generation to the next, who honors you as God.

With all my heart I glorify the Lord!

In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.

He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.

Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored

because the mighty one has done great things for me.

Holy is his name.

He shows mercy to everyone,

from one generation to the next,

who honors him as God.

He has shown strength with his arm.

He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations.

He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones

and lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things

and sent the rich away empty-handed.

He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,

remembering his mercy,

just as he promised to our ancestors,

to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.

Luke 1:46-55

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

You show mercy to everyone, from one generation to the next, who honors you as God.

Brief silence.

The Apostle’s Creed

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.
