Preparation

Opening response

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Lord God, creator of day and night:
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As darkness falls you renew your promise
to reveal among us the light of your presence.
By the light of Christ, your living Word,
dispel the darkness of our hearts
that we may walk as children of light
and sing your praise throughout the world.
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.

Hymn

Father, God We Glorify

Charles Wesley

Father, God, we glorify
Thy love to Adam’s seed;
Love that gave thy Son to die,
And raised him from the dead:
Him, for our offenses slain,
That we all might pardon find,
Thou hast brought to life again,
The Savior of mankind.

By thy own right hand of power
Thou hast exalted him,
Sent the mighty Conqueror
Thy people to redeem:
King of saints, and Prince of Peace,
Him thou hast for sinners given,
Sinners from their sins to bless,
And lift them up to heaven.

Father, God, to us impart
The gift unspeakable;
Now in every waiting heart
Thy glorious Son reveal:
Quickened with our living Lord,
Let us in thy Spirit rise,
Rise to all thy life restored,
And bless thee in the skies.

Confession of sin

Come, Holy Spirit of God,
and search our hearts with the light of Christ.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said:
The first commandment is this:
‘Israel, listen! Our God is the one Lord,
and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your being, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.’

The second is this: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’
No other commandment is greater than these.
All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.

Amen. Lord, have mercy.

After a period of reflection

Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

Lord our God,
in our sin we have avoided your call.
Our love for you is like a morning cloud,
like the dew that goes away early.
Have mercy on us;
deliver us from judgment;
bind up our wounds and revive us;
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

cf Hosea 6

May almighty God,
who sent his Son into the world to save sinners,
bring us his pardon and peace, now and forever.
Amen.

The Word of God

Psalm 114

Refrain:
Earth: Tremble before the Lord!

When Israel came out of Egypt—
    when the house of Jacob came out
    from a people who spoke a different language—
    Judah was God’s sanctuary;
    Israel was God’s territory.

The sea saw it happen and ran away;
    the Jordan River retreated!
The mountains leaped away like rams;
    the hills leaped away like lambs!
Sea, why did you run away?
    Jordan, why did you retreat?
    Mountains, why did you leap away like rams?
    Hills, why did you leap away like lambs?

Earth: Tremble before the Lord!
    Tremble before the God of Jacob,
        the one who turned that rock into a pool of water,
        that flint stone into a spring of water!

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:
Earth: Tremble before the Lord!

Psalm prayer

Strike the rock of our hard hearts, God,
and let our tears of joy and sorrow
mold us to bear the imprint of your love,
given in Christ our risen Lord.

Psalm 116

Refrain:
The Lord is merciful and righteous.

I love the Lord because he hears
    my requests for mercy.
I’ll call out to him as long as I live,
    because he listens closely to me.
Death’s ropes bound me;
    the distress of the grave found me—
    I came face-to-face with trouble and grief.
So I called on the Lord’s name:
    “Lord, please save me!”
The Lord is merciful and righteous;
    our God is compassionate.
The Lord protects simple folk;
    he saves me whenever I am brought down.
I tell myself, You can be at peace again,
    because the Lord has been good to you.
You, God, have delivered me from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    and my foot from stumbling,
    so I’ll walk before the Lord
    in the land of the living.
I have remained faithful, even when I said,
    “I am suffering so badly!”
    even when I said, out of fear,
    “Everyone is a liar!”
What can I give back to the Lord
    for all the good things he has done for me?
I’ll lift up the cup of salvation.
    I’ll call on the Lord’s name.
I’ll keep the promises I made to the Lord
    in the presence of all God’s people.
The death of the Lord’s faithful
    is a costly loss in his eyes.
Oh yes, Lord, I am definitely your servant!
    I am your servant and the son of your female servant—
    you’ve freed me from my chains.
So I’ll offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to you,
    and I’ll call on the Lord’s name.
I’ll keep the promises I made to the Lord
    in the presence of all God’s people,
    in the courtyards of the Lord’s house,
        which is in the center of Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:
The Lord is merciful and righteous.

Psalm prayer

As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
may we call upon your name,
raise the cup of salvation,
and so proclaim your death, Lord,
until you come in glory.

Psalm 117

Praise the Lord, all you nations!
    Worship him, all you peoples!
Because God’s faithful love toward us is strong,
    the Lord’s faithfulness lasts forever!
Praise the Lord!

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm prayer

Gracious God,
we praise you for your faithfulness
and pray that every nation may find your blessing
in the face of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Old Testament reading
Proverbs 20:1-22

Wine is a mocker; beer a carouser.
    Those it leads astray won’t become wise.
A king is as terrifying as a lion’s growl.
    Those who anger him may lose their life.
It is honorable to back off from a fight,
    but fools jump right in.
The lazy don’t plow during winter;
    at harvest they look but find nothing.
Advice comes from the deep waters of the heart;
    those with understanding can draw it out.
Many people will say that they are loyal,
    but who can find a reliable person?
The righteous live with integrity;
    happy are their children who come after them.
A king who sits on his judgment throne
    sifts out all evil with his eyes.
Who can say, “I’m innocent to the core;
    I’m cleansed from my sin”?
False weights and measures—
    the Lord detests them both.
Even young people are known by their actions,
    whether their conduct is pure and upright.
Ears to hear and eyes to see—
    the Lord made them both.
Don’t love sleep or you will be poor;
    stay alert and you will have plenty to eat.
The buyer says, “Bad, bad,”
    but then goes away and brags.
Much gold and many pearls exist,
    but wise speech is the most precious jewel.
Take the garment of the person who secures a loan for a stranger;
    take his pledge for a foreigner.
Stolen bread is sweet,
    but afterward the mouth is full of gravel.
Plans are firmed up by advice;
    wage wars with good guidance.
Gossips reveal secrets;
    don’t associate with those who talk too much.
Those who curse their father or mother—
    their lamp will be snuffed out when it becomes dark.
Inheritance gained quickly at first
    won’t bless later on.
Don’t say, “I’ll repay the evildoer!”
    Wait for the Lord, and he will save you.

Silence may be kept.

New Testament reading
Mark 7:24-30

Jesus left that place and went into the region of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know that he had entered a house, but he couldn’t hide. In fact, a woman whose young daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard about him right away. She came and fell at his feet. The woman was Greek, Syrophoenician by birth. She begged Jesus to throw the demon out of her daughter. He responded, “The children have to be fed first. It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

But she answered, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

“Good answer!” he said. “Go on home. The demon has already left your daughter.” When she returned to her house, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone.

Silence may be kept.

Gospel canticle
The Magnificat (The Song of Mary)

Refrain:
God, you have done great things and holy is your name.

With all my heart I glorify the Lord!
In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.
He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.
Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
Holy is his name.
He shows mercy to everyone,
from one generation to the next,
who honors him as God.
He has shown strength with his arm.
He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations.
He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones
and lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty-handed.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
remembering his mercy,
just as he promised to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.

Luke 1:46-55

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:
God, you have done great things and holy is your name.

Brief silence.

The Apostle’s Creed

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Response

Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer.

Silence may be kept.

Collect of the day

Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things
      which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation
of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Savior taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen.

Conclusion

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.
Amen.
