Preparation

Opening response

Lord, open our lips
and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

Your light springs up for the righteous
and all the peoples have seen your glory.

Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God,
king of the nations,
to you be praise and glory forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting
your name is proclaimed in all the world.
As the Sun of Righteousness dawns in our hearts
anoint our lips with the seal of your Spirit
that we may witness to your gospel
and sing your praise in all the earth.
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and forever.
Amen.

Hymn

Being of Beings, God of Love

Charles Wesley

Being of beings, God of love,
To thee our hearts we raise;
Thy all-sustaining power we prove,
And gladly sing thy praise.

Thine, wholly thine, we pant to be;
Our sacrifice receive!
Made, and preserved, and saved by thee,
To thee ourselves we give.

Heavenward our every wish aspires
For all thy mercy’s store,
The sole return thy love requires,
Is that we ask for more.

For more we ask; we open then
Our hearts to embrace thy will,
Turn and revive us, Lord again,
With all thy fullness fill.

Come, Holy Ghost, the Savior’s love
Shed in our hearts abroad:
So shall we ever live and move,
And be with Christ in God.

Confession of sin

The Lord is compassionate and merciful,
very patient, and full of faithful love.
He doesn’t deal with us according to our sin
or repay us according to our wrongdoing,
Because as high as heaven is above the earth,
that’s how large God’s faithful love is for those who honor him.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Holy God,
Holy and strong,
Holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.

As far as east is from west—
that’s how far God has removed our sin from us.

As a father has compassion on his children,
that’s how the Lord feels compassion for those who honor him.

Let my whole being bless the Lord.
Let everything inside me bless his holy name.

Let my whole being bless the Lord,
and never forget all his good deeds.

The Word of God

Psalm 21

Refrain:
Lord, we will sing and praise your power!

The king celebrates your strength, Lord;
    look how happy he is about your saving help!
You’ve given him what his heart desires;
    you haven’t denied what his lips requested.
You bring rich blessings right to him;
    you put a crown of pure gold on his head.
He asked you for life,
    and you gave it to him, all right—
    long days, forever and always!
The king’s reputation is great
    because of your saving help;
    you’ve conferred on him glory and grandeur.
You grant him blessings forever;
    you make him happy
        with the joy of your presence.
    Because the king trusts the Lord,
    and because of the Most High’s faithful love,
        he will not stumble.
Your hand will catch all your enemies;
    your strong hand will catch all who hate you.
When you appear, Lord,
    you will light them up like an oven on fire.
        God will eat them whole in his anger;
        fire will devour them.
You will destroy their offspring from the land;
    destroy their descendants from the human race.
Because they sought to do you harm,
    they devised a wicked plan—but they will fail!
Because you will make them turn and run
    when you aim your bow straight at their faces!
Be exalted, Lord, in your strength!
    We will sing and praise your power!

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:
Lord, we will sing and praise your power!

Psalm prayer

Crown us, God, but with humility,
and robe us with compassion,
that, as you call us into the kingdom of your Son,
we may strive to overcome all evil
by the power of good
and so walk gently on the earth
with you, our God, forever.

Psalm 24

Refrain:
The Lord of heavenly forces — he is the glorious king!

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,
    the world and its inhabitants too.
Because God is the one who established it on the seas;
    God set it firmly on the waters.
Who can ascend the Lord’s mountain?
    Who can stand in his holy sanctuary?
Only the one with clean hands and a pure heart;
    the one who hasn’t made false promises,
    the one who hasn’t sworn dishonestly.
That kind of person receives blessings from the Lord
    and righteousness from the God who saves.
And that’s how things are
    with the generation that seeks him—
    that seeks the face of Jacob’s God.
Mighty gates: lift up your heads!
    Ancient doors: rise up high!
        So the glorious king can enter!
Who is this glorious king?
    The Lord—strong and powerful!
    The Lord—powerful in battle!
Mighty gates: lift up your heads!
    Ancient doors: rise up high!
        So the glorious king can enter!
Who is this glorious king?
    The Lord of heavenly forces—
        he is the glorious king!

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:
The Lord of heavenly forces — he is the glorious king!

Psalm prayer

O Lord of heavenly forces,
purify our hearts
that the glorious king may come in,
your Son, Jesus our redeemer.

Old Testament reading
Amos 4

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan,
        who are on Mount Samaria,
        who cheat the weak,
        who crush the needy,
        who say to their husbands, “Bring drinks, so we can get drunk!”
    The Lord God has solemnly promised by his holiness:
        The days are surely coming upon you,
        when they will take you away with hooks,
        even the last one of you with fishhooks.
    You will go out through the broken wall,
        each one after another;
        and you will be flung out into Harmon,
says the Lord.

    Come to Bethel—and commit a crime;
        multiply crimes at Gilgal.
    Bring your sacrifices every morning,
        your tenth-part gifts every three days.
    Offer a thanksgiving sacrifice of leavened bread,
        and publicize your gifts to the Lord;
        for so you love to do, people of Israel!
says the Lord God.

I have sent a famine in all your cities,
        and not provided enough bread in all your places,
        yet you didn’t return to me,
says the Lord.
    I also withheld rain from you
        when there were still three months to the harvest.
    I allowed no rain to fall on one city,
        no rain to fall on another city.
    One field was rained on,
        and the field dried up where it didn’t rain.
    So two or three thirsty towns went to one city to drink water, and weren’t satisfied;
        yet you didn’t return to me,
says the Lord.

    I struck you with disease and mildew.
        I destroyed your gardens and your vineyards.
    The locust devoured your fig trees and your olive trees;
        yet you didn’t return to me,
says the Lord.

I sent a plague against you like the one in Egypt.
        I killed your young men with the sword.
    I carried away your horses.
        I made the stink of your camp go up into your nostrils;
        yet you didn’t return to me,
says the Lord.

I destroyed some of you,
        as when God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
    You were like a burning coal plucked out of the fire;
        yet you didn’t return to me,
says the Lord.
Truly, Israel,
    I will act in this way toward you;
        therefore, I will do this to you.
        Prepare to meet your God, Israel!

The one who forms the mountains, creates the wind,
        makes known his thoughts to humankind,
    makes the morning darkness,
        and moves over the heights of the earth—
        the Lord, the God of heavenly forces is his name!

Silence may be kept.

New Testament reading
1 Corinthians 3

Brothers and sisters, I couldn’t talk to you like spiritual people but like unspiritual people, like babies in Christ. I gave you milk to drink instead of solid food, because you weren’t up to it yet. Now you are still not up to it because you are still unspiritual. When jealousy and fighting exist between you, aren’t you unspiritual and living by human standards? When someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and someone else says, “I belong to Apollos,” aren’t you acting like people without the Spirit? After all, what is Apollos? What is Paul? They are servants who helped you to believe. Each one had a role given to them by the Lord: I planted, Apollos watered, but God made it grow. Because of this, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but the only one who is anything is God who makes it grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together, but each one will receive their own reward for their own labor. We are God’s coworkers, and you are God’s field, God’s building.

I laid a foundation like a wise master builder according to God’s grace that was given to me, but someone else is building on top of it. Each person needs to pay attention to the way they build on it. No one can lay any other foundation besides the one that is already laid, which is Jesus Christ. So, whether someone builds on top of the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, or hay, each one’s work will be clearly shown. The day will make it clear, because it will be revealed with fire—the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. If anyone’s work survives, they’ll get a reward. But if anyone’s work goes up in flames, they’ll lose it. However, they themselves will be saved as if they had gone through a fire. Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and God’s Spirit lives in you? If someone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person, because God’s temple is holy, which is what you are.

Don’t fool yourself. If some of you think they are worldly-wise, then they should become foolish so that they can become wise. This world’s wisdom is foolishness to God. As it’s written, He catches the wise in their cleverness. And also, The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are silly. So then, no one should brag about human beings. Everything belongs to you— Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, things in the present, things in the future—everything belongs to you, but you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Silence may be kept.

Gospel canticle
The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah)

Refrain:
This is the Christ, the Chosen of God, the one who will bring healing to the nations.

Bless the Lord God of Israel
because he has come to help and has delivered his people.
He has raised up a mighty savior for us in his servant David’s house,
just as he said through the mouths of his holy prophets long ago.
He has brought salvation from our enemies
and from the power of all those who hate us.
He has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,
and remembered his holy covenant,
the solemn pledge he made to our ancestor Abraham.
He has granted that we would be rescued
from the power of our enemies
so that we could serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness in God’s eyes,
for as long as we live.
You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way.
You will tell his people how to be saved
through the forgiveness of their sins.
Because of our God’s deep compassion,
the dawn from heaven will break upon us,
to give light to those who are sitting in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide us on the path of peace.”

Luke 1:68-79

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:
This is the Christ, the Chosen of God, the one who will bring healing to the nations.

Brief silence.

The Apostle’s Creed

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Silence may be kept.

Collect of the day

Eternal Father,
who at the baptism of Jesus
revealed him to be your Son,
anointing him with the Holy Spirit:
grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit,
that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Believing the promises of God, as our Savior taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen.

Conclusion

May Christ, who sends us to the nations, give us the power of his Spirit.
Amen.
